Apparently, protesting has become just another form of entertainment, one more way to pass leisure time, at least for a segment of population (which I am rather tended to equate with lefty-minded academe). We see pictures (on facebook, of course) of smiling faces - no worry, no anger - who come out on sunny weekends to demonstrate their solidarity with this or that cause to which they more often than not have no direct relationship. While I neither generally criticise nor approve of it (I interpret this as just one more idiosyncratic feature of our societies and I am trying to be more of an observer than a participant), the heavy irony of the recent one (about occupying places) cannot possibly escape you: people go to protest against large corporations, take pictures with cameras produced by those same corporations and post in on a website owned by another huge corporation with the help of a computer manufactured by yet another one (if they are hungry, they might stop by another one's outlet to have a cheap and quick snack).

Сегодня из Сиэтла ко мне в Ванкувер приехал друг из Омска Илья Онскуль, и мы с ним замечательно погуляли по городу и посмотрели, среди прочего, прекрасный Ванкуверский аквариум с каланами, белугами, пираньями и прочими интересностями.

Только ощущение это было, конечно, более чем странное. Сказал бы кто-нибудь нам в 2008 году, что мы встретимся на берегу океана в Ванкувере, причём Илья попадёт туда через Америку, а я через Венгрию - то-то, пожалуй, смеху бы было.

Помимо этого, было, конечно, ещё и очень отчётливое ощущение космополитской экспатности - вся эта реальность эмигрантской литературы (да и просто эмигрантских историй) совершенно отчётливо стала моей реальностью.

Ну и без устной речи что-то тяжело стало осмысленные фразы строить :)

The most popular alternative to blaming the whole ethnic group has been to blame elites, especially state elites. It is said that atrocities happen when people are subjected to malign, manipulative leaders. Democracy and the people are seen as pacific, whereas leaders and elites are potentially more murderous. In civil society theory, democracy, peace, and tolerance are said to result when individuals are engaged in vibrant, dense social relations provided by voluntary institutions, which protect them from the manipulations of state elites (Putnam, 1993, 2000). This is naive. Radical ethnonationalists often succeed precisely because their civil society networks are denser and more mobilizing than those of their more moderate rivals. This was true of the Nazis (see my book Fascists, chap. 4; Hagtvet, 1980; Koshar, 1986), and we see later that it was also true of Serb, Croat, and Hutu nationalists. Civil society may be evil.

Как и обещал, небольшой отчёт.

Летел я из Москвы через Франкфурт с велосипедом, туристическим и обычным рюкзаками. Долетело всё, хотя велосипед изрядно попортили, а пока я ждал, когда у меня появится время его отвезти в ремонт, у него ещё и украли седло с подседельным штырём. Деталей для велосипедов GT в Канаде днём с огнём не сыщешь, так что пока я сижу без велосипеда.

Рейс из Франкфурта в очередной раз напомнил мне об огромном разрыве между Россией (и другими постсоветскими странами) и Западной Европой: капитан самолёта, который всё время шутил на очень неплохом английском, вместо стандартной инструкции по безопасности забавный фильм на двух языках (о том, что нельзя курить, рассказывается в коротком сюжете об индейце с трубкой мира, Элвис Пресли выключает плеер во время взлёта, а в конце Нил Армстронг говорит что-то вроде "One small step for you, one giant leap for flight safety"). Лететь долго, до Франкфурта что-то около трёх с половиной часов и до Ванкувера ещё десять. Разница по времени у меня с Будапештом -9, с Москвой -11, с Омском и Нском, соответственно, -14.

The scientific work of Kovalevskii and Mechnikov [a Nobel Prize winner later - DM] represented the crowning point in the reception and early application of Darwin's ideas by Russian natural scientists. But how were these scientists regarded by the Russian scientific community? Although the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences published their papers, they had difficulty in finding suitable employment. At the time when St. Petersburg and Moscow provided the most coveted academic positions, Kovalevskii and Mechnikov had no choice but to seek teaching positions in provincial universities, equipped with poor laboratories and libraries and wanting in intellectual stimulus for sustained scientific work. Mechnikov's candidacy for a position in the Medical and Surgical Academy in St. Petersburg proved futile. He served sixteen years on the faculty of the newly founded Odessa University, resigning in 1882 to avoid the grueling pressure of academic intrigue and student unrest. In 1887, before he had reached the peak of his scientific career, he left Russia to join the Pasteur Institute in Paris, where he remained until his death in 1916. A. O. Kovalevskii spent twenty-two years of his academic career in Kazan, Kiev, and Odessa universities fighting the depressing monotony of provincial isolation by extensive correspondence with western European embryologists, frequent scientific trips to the Mediterranean Sea, and cooperative research ventures with eminent foreign scientists.

Программа будет проходить с сентября 2011 года по май 2012 года в Санкт-Петербурге с несколькими занятиями в Москве. Цель программы - сформировать сеть специалистов, хорошо понимающих индустрию и ориентированных на работу по развитию российской инновационной экосистемы.

В GameChangers выделены два тематических направления: "ИТ в банках и электронные платежи" и "бизнес в области бионформатики", а также три специализации: корпоративная, предпринимательская и экосистемная. Среди партнеров программы: РВК, Cisco, OpenWay Group, JetBrains, i-Free, EMC2, Deloitte, бизнес-инкубаторы "Ингрия", QD при НИУ ИТМО, HSE{Inc} при НИУ ВШЭ и венчурный фонд Runa Capital.

К участию приглашаются студенты (20 мест) и организации. Для студентов программа "GameChangers" - это возможность найти свое место в индустрии ИТ, общение с ведущими специалистами и руководителями организаций-партнеров, проектная работа над реальными задачами и стажировки. If there is anything to the idea that the best intellectual position is one which is attacked with equal vigour from the political right and the political left, then I am in good shape. I am often cited by conservative culture warriors as one of the relativistic, irrationalist, deconstructing, sneering, smirking intellectuals whose writings are weakening the moral fibre of the young. Neal Kozody, writing in the monthly bulletin of the Committee for the Free World, an organization known for its vigilance against symptoms of moral weakness, denounces my 'cynical and nihilistic view' and says 'it is not enough for him [Rorty] that American students should be merely mindless; he would have them positively mobilized for mindlessness'. Richard Neuhaus, a theologian who doubts that atheists can be good American citizens, says that the 'ironist vocabulary' I advocate 'can neither provide a public language for the citizens of a democracy, nor contend intellectually against the enemies of democracy, nor transmit the reasons for democracy to the next generation'. My criticisms of Allan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind led Harvey Mansfield - recently appointed by President Bush to the National Council for the Humanities - to say that I have 'given up on America' and that I 'manage to diminish even Dewey'. (Mansfield recently described Dewey as a 'medium-sized malefactor'.) His colleague on the council, my fellow philosopher John Searle, thinks that standards can only be restored to American higher education if people abandon the views on truth, knowledge and objectivity that I do my best to inculcate.

Вот открыл я тут по приключаю учебник для 10 класса "Русская литература 19 века", автор Ю.В. Лебедев (3ье издание, 2002, допущено министерством образования РФ), по которому нас в школе ещё учили, и на первой же странице в разделе "от автора" вижу такие незабвенные слова: "ни одна литература мира не дала человеку такого возвышающего и одухотворяющего идеала, какой утверждает литература русская, вся пропитанная благодатным излучением православно-христианской духовности". Вот кроме шуток, так и написано.

Frida Kahlo de Rivera (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954).

Kahlo's life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House.

Kahlo had a marriage (two troubled ones, as a matter of fact, with a separation period of a year) with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Active communists, Kahlo and Rivera befriended Leon Trotsky after he gained political asylum in Mexico from Joseph Stalin's regime in the Soviet Union during the late 1930s. During 1937, Trotsky lived initially with Rivera and then at Kahlo's home (where he had an affair with Kahlo). Trotsky and his wife then relocated to another house in Coyoacán where, in 1940, he was assassinated.

Frida Kahlo died on July 13, 1954, soon after turning 47. A few days before her death she wrote in her diary: "I hope the exit is joyful — and I hope never to return — Frida". The official cause of death was given as a pulmonary embolism, although some suspected that she died from an overdose that may or may not have been accidental.

More  than  two  thousand  years  ago,  the  Roman  orator,  belletrist,  thinker, Stoic,  manipulator-politician,  and  (usually)  virtuous  gentleman,  Marcus Tullius Cicero, presented the following story. One Diagoras, a nonbeliever in  the  gods,  was  shown  painted  tablets  bearing  the  portraits  of  some worshippers  who  prayed,  then  survived  a  subsequent  shipwreck.  The implication was that praying protects you  from  drowning.  Diagoras  asked, “Where were the pictures of those who prayed, then drowned?”

The  drowned  worshippers,  being  dead,  would  have  a  lot  of  trouble advertising their experiences from the bottom of the sea. This can fool  the casual observer into believing in miracles.

[Laszlo] Rajk's father, a veteran of the Spanish Civil War, was the most popular Communist leader after World War II. In his capacity as the minister of the intetior he played a crucial role at the first show trials, but he was tried and then hanged as a Titoist spy during the most famous of the Hungarian purges in 1949. Together with other Communist leaders, he was  secretly buried in the woods not far from Budapest, in the village where Count Pal Teleki, the prime minister of Hungary during the Hungarian and German occupation of Yugoslavia, was put to rest afrer his suicide. Rajk was then rehabilitated after Stalin's death, and on the demand of large groups both inside and  outside of the  party,  Rajk and three other hanged  Communist leaders were reburied  on October  6, 1956 - the  anniversaty  of the  day Count Batthyany was killed. The reburial turned out to  be the prelude of the  1956  Revolurion.  Imre  Nagy  was  present  at  the  ceremony: a photo shows him offering his condolences to the widow and the seven-year-old Laszlo Rajk (later to become the stage designer of the Imre Nagy reburial).

Writing the recent history of the Central and Eastern part of Europe is  unlike  the work of the Western  historian, who can turn to  published sources, contemporary reports, memoirs by participants and eyewitnesses, whose  work is  embedded  in solid,  mostly  normalized and consolidated public memory.  Usually it is not the historian who is the messenger there, unlike in the less fortunate part of the world, where the message is, more often than not, bad news. The recent history of Central and Eastern Europe is the history of bad times.

Apatheia (Greek: ἀπάθεια) in Stoic philosophy refers to a state of mind where one is free from emotional disturbance. This might be translated as equanimity or indifference. This is the root of the word apathy.Apatheia must, however, not be confused with apathy.Apatheia is a positive term; apathy, a purely negative one.
Whereas Aristotle had claimed that virtue was to be found in the golden mean between excess and deficiency of emotion (metriopatheia), the Stoics sought freedom from all passions (apatheia). It meant eradicating the emotional response to external events - the things we cannot control. For the Stoics, it was the optimum rational response to the world, for we cannot control things that are caused by the will of others or by Nature, we can only control our own will. This did not mean a loss of all feeling, or total disengagement from the world. The Stoic who performs correct (virtuous) judgments and actions as part of the world-order experiences contentment (eudaimonia) and good feelings (eupatheia).

Читал роман, и мне подумалось, что ключевой элемент любого хорошего романа и его главная особенность - в специфических отношениях со временем, которые разнятся с тем ощущением и представлением времени, которое мы имеем и переживаем от регулярного проживания жизни. Потом подумал, что то же самое можно сказать про любую форму художественных произведений. А потом подумал, что это мои личные особенности заставляют меня замечать это временное измерение и наслаждаться им, и поэтому я обращаю внимание в первую очередь на время, а другие люди видят другое, и обобщать тут нельзя.

Для тех, кто не прочитал описание к альбому о великом художнике: Александр Павлович Лобанов (1924—2003) — советский душевнобольной ар брют художник. В 7 лет переболел менингитом, от чего стал глухонемым. В 1947 году госпитализирован в психиатрическую больницу, где провёл 56 лет (2/3) своей жизни. На его рисунках часто встречается оружие, особенно фантастическая «двустволка Мосина» — изменённая винтовка Мосина 1891 года.

Seriously, people, it's not that complicated, and yet all too many complain about losing something they had written. As deadlines for so many scholarly things approach, here's a couple of very easy suggestions to follow:

• Every decent text editor nowadays has an autosave function. Don't forget to set it to a very short time interval, say, 4-5 minutes!
• Don't forget to turn the "always create a backup copy" option on!
• There is software out there that synchronises everything you do with Internet in the background. I personally use dropbox.com, which I highly recommend. It even saves previous versions of your files, which can come in really handy!
• Use referencer software for your footnotes. I personally recommend Zotero, which is an easy to use plug-in for Mozilla Firefox. It really saves tons of time!

Don't make your lives more complicated than they already are, and successful submissions, defences and whatever there is ahead to everyone :)

По его мнению, эта универсальная формула вмещает в себя все возможные знаковые конструкции – подобно тому, как бесконечное пространство вселенной вмещает в себя все возможные космические объекты.
«То, что имеется общая форма предложения, – пишет Витгенштейн, – доказывается тем, что не может быть ни одного предложения, чью форму нельзя было бы предвидеть (т.е. сконструировать). Общая форма предложения такова: „дело обстоит так-то и так-то“ („Es verhält sich so und so“).
Однако доцент Иркутского педагогического института филолог Александр Сиринд сумел опровергнуть знаменитую формулу, приведя недавно пример предложения, которое выходит за пределы начертанной австрийским философом всеохватывающей парадигмы. Оно звучит так: «Иди на хуй, Витгенштейн».
– Ошибка австрияка в том, что он забыл старика Шопенгауэра, – говорит ученый, – а ведь мир есть не только представление, но и воля!»
